How To Set Goals For The New Year
Where do you see yourself in December 2020? The beginning of a new year is always a great opportunity to set new goals: find a new job, have an international experience, or learn a new skill. There are plenty of objectives you can define for the upcoming year, however, setting these goals can be a bit challenging.
Overplanning is one of the most common mistakes people make at this time of year. The idea that it’s possible to fix all of your problems one year is nothing but a pipe dream. As soon as the new year starts, you’ll realize that you’re not able to keep up with all the promises you made and end up abandoning them. As a consequence, you’ll feel frustrated once again.
What about making it different in 2020?
In this article, you’ll learn insightful tips on how to set goals for the new year and actually follow through!
1. Narrow Down Your List
We all want to change a list of things in our lives, right? We also know that it’s pretty tough to change everything at once. So, when it’s time to set goals for the new year, you need to narrow down your ideas.
Try to set a maximum of three main goals to achieve in the next year. According to Brianna Wiest, American Author and Senior Contributor at Forbes, it’s easier to accomplish your goals when they’re not spread out into different areas. Brianna also explains that a smaller list also helps you figure out what you really care about. “Get crystal clear on exactly what you want and what you care enough about—that passion will help motivate you in the months to come.”
2. Work and Life Balance
We have no doubt about how important is to be career-driven—getting promoted, learning a new skill that will help your career, and attending the biggest event in your industry are all incredible accomplishments. Even so, you still need to set goals for your personal life.
Don’t overthink.
Starting a healthier diet, exercising, or meditating every day are a few common examples that will help you to balance your work and personal lives.
3. Set Mini-Milestones
Think about your biggest achievements in life…they all happened by reaching small milestones.
When you’re learning a new language, for example, you don’t become fluent in 24 hours. Little by little, you learn words, then how to put them together, and then how to create sentences in the present, past, and future tenses. Every new accomplishment, no matter how small, is a milestone that needs to be celebrated.
Use the same idea for your goals in 2020. Set mini-milestones that will prove you’re on the right path. It’s a simple tip to keep you motivated throughout the year.
4. Be Realistic
What’s the difference between December 31st and January 1st? Apart from the hangover for those partied a bit too much, there are no massive changes, right?
So, when setting your goals for the new year, you need to be realistic. Define the objectives that you know are doable. You need to challenge yourself, but in a way that won’t leave you feeling frustrated.
Be ambitious but with your feet on the ground.
5. Enjoy the Ride
The best part of improving ourselves is being able to enjoy life at its best. You need to keep this in mind when setting your goals.
Enjoy every day of 2020. Celebrate your small achievements and embrace your failures—they are all part of professional and personal development.
